There is an old saying in sports that says: “You are hired to be fired.” That sounds great in today’s NBA, and inexperienced head coaches feel the greatest. There will be five new NBA head coaches this year, two of whom are former players who had no experience as top coaches. Fans and some analysts were rightly stunned by these attitudes. No high-profile coaching experience, no success or history to support you. You are basically doomed to failure in one place, unless your David Blatt, but he has other problems to solve that are full of pressure and high expectations.
Steve Kerr (GSW), David Blatt (CLE) and Quin Snyder (UTAH) are the few rookie head coaches who have experience as coaches/general managers at various levels. Blatt was the head coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv before taking over Cleveland. It was a very strong and dominant team in the Euroleague. He also led the Russian team to a surprising bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Blatt has a very unique road ahead of him and it will be filled with careful tests and expectations. With “the King”, Kyrie and K-Love will definitely make his transition to the NBA easier. Blatt’s rude sets and strategies include a hefty dose of pick and roll as well as horns (2 tall posts). He needs to take a page out of Erik Spoelstra’s book and get the players to stick to the defensive end and work from there. This will not happen right away.
Patience must be a virtue for the players, fans and the leadership of the Cavs. It took the HEAT’s big three a year to learn how to win and play together. They managed to reach four consecutive NBA finals and win two championships.
Quin Snyder has a young and exciting team to work with. He has college experience as a coach (Duke and Missouri) and most recently as an assistant coach for Atlanta. He first studied under coach K and now he is on the pedigree of the descendants of Greg Popovoich.
Studying under the guidance of Mike Budenholzer will only help him succeed in the NBA, and not a sad story of another canned recruit. It will be exciting to see Snyder develop the chemistry between Dante Exum, Hayward and Trey Burke.
Steve Kerr will be one of the first trainers in the saddle. It is based on the list of warriors and recent achievements. Mark Jackson was loved by this team, but the feelings of the management were not so kind. Kerr needs to win the trust of Curry, Thompson and the rest of the Warriors. Kerr played for two of the greatest coaches in Phil Jackson and Greg Popovoich.
He has a lot of talent to work with, and it’s important to make defense the top priority. strike and score will not be a problem, so it is important to strengthen the players on the defensive. Confidence, leadership and results are factors that are responsible for the success or failure of Steve Kerr’s tenure at the Golden State.
Derek Fisher and Jason Kidd are the two coaches who switch directly from the jersey to the suit and tie. Jason Kidd had a difficult season with the veteran-laden Nets, which earned him a playoff victory. Being a head coach was not enough for him and he wanted more control. The networks had to think it was a joke, but, unfortunately, they were wrong. They then “traded” him to the Bucks for draft picks in the offseason. Fisher becomes the coach of Melo and the Circus, which includes the rest of the Knicks roster.
He will be a good puppet for Phil Jackson and will try to carry out his patented triangle strike. The way Fischer responds to the increased expectations and media pressure in New York will compete with the drama of a Broadway show in New York. Fisher has nowhere to go, but he has a viable situation.
Having Carmelo Anthony on your team doesn’t hurt either. Having a pure scorer and a go to guy is a player that everyone needs and wants. Ball movement and altruism need to bring D-Fish into the Knicks culture and the team.
No one likes to sit in the hot seat, and the CEOs have now found someone to sit in that special seat. Their mentality is that coaches are to blame if coaches can’t work with what they give them. It’s an easy way for GM and a clever way to keep their work tactful. It will be exciting to see how this season develops and which coaches survive and progress.
